PICS conducts leading-edge research and development in computer security technologies, policy, and law.
Engaging the theme of "Active Confrontation," PICS strives to bridge the gap between the industry and the public sector. PICS' unique focus is on:
- Scale and Manageability of Intrusion Detection and Investigation - large site and multi-organization cooperation
- Intelligence gathering, trend analysis and prediction - "Hacker state of the art"
- Legal Implications of Computer Security, Investigation, and Forensics - public policy and law
- The Human Factor of Computer Security Management - "It's about people, not just technology"
PICS work to date includes publications, presentations, and software development. PICS staff have contributed to CERT advisories, testified before government committees, and sponsored conferences.
PICS actively works in partnership with law enforcement, Department of Defense, and the security industry. Initially funded by the Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA), PICS has received support from several government agencies and other sponsors.
